A peaceful waterfall flowing through a green forest

A steadier way forward

Connection begins with being heard.

Hard conversations do not have to become hurtful conversations. The work is to slow the moment down, understand what is underneath the reaction, and respond as partners rather than opponents.

01

Speak from your experience

Use clear “I feel” and “I need” language instead of blame, labels, or mind-reading.

02

Listen to understand

Reflect what you heard before responding. Being understood lowers the urge to defend.

03

Repair with intention

Name the impact, take responsibility for your part, and agree on one small change to practice.

Couples communication dialogue

A five-step conversation reset.

Take turns. One partner speaks while the other listens. Move through each step slowly, then switch roles.

Pause is part of the process.
If either person feels overwhelmed, take a 20-minute break and agree on a specific time to return.

Step 1 of 5 · Speaker

Begin with what happened—not what you think it means.

Try saying: “When ___ happened, I noticed I felt ___.”

Keep it to one moment. Avoid “always,” “never,” and character judgments.
